Shedding up to 100 hair a day is considered normal. In a normal hair growth cycle, as your hair falls out naturally, it is replaced by a new hair from the same follicle located just beneath the skin surface and new hair grows in.

As we age, the hair re-growth process may slow or stop, and thinning or baldness areas may occur.  

Hair loss occurs in one of every five women.  Women make up forty percent of the total hair loss in America.

 What causes hair loss or baldness?
 Most men and women experience some form of hair loss baldness, balding or thinning hair during their life.  Some men and women start losing hair by showing thinning hair all around the scalp, while others develop a slight hair loss as a bald spot at a specific area.  Some individuals have complete hair loss or total baldness within a short time.

How does hair loss effect us psychologically?
Hair loss or baldness is an important part of an individual's appearance in our image orientated society. When you meet someone for the first time, the first thing he notices is your hair or hair loss. Public figures, such as politicians, actors and actresses, spend a lot of time each day "doing" their hair because they understand the importance society places on appearance and youthful image.

What is normal hair growth or normal hair loss?
In 95 percent of all hair loss cases, the most common hair loss cause is due to an inherited baldness known as androgenic alopecia. Over 66 percent of men and over 20 percent of women experience this type of hair loss called
"male-pattern baldness" or "female-pattern baldness." 

Facing hair loss symptoms such as thinning hair or baldness, due to male pattern baldness condition or alopecia areata hair loss disease can pose an array of questions.

 School-age children who suffer from large hair loss with bald spots and hair breaking off, should seek physician care immediately. 

 Any large quantity of hair loss should be seen as underlying medical disorder.  It is a signal to seek medical attention for diagnosis of hair loss cause.  Seek a health care provider when  hair falls out, all over the place such as covering the pillows and seen in clumps on the bath counter.

Temporary hair loss may be initiated by medications, such as blood pressure drugs, Beta Blockers for depression,  oral contraceptives as Estrogens, Naproxin Sodium (Nuprin) and others.  Also, excessive intake of iron or vitamin A is toxic and can cause hair loss.  Some illnesses may lead to thinning hair, including: thyroid disease, overactive or under active thyroid gland,  ringworm, syphilis, and even high fever.  Diseases, such as circulatory disorders and arthritis are factors of hair loss.

In addition, anxiety habits, such as, compulsive hair pulling or scalp rubbing damage hair follicles. This nervous behavior is known as tri-chotillomania, and it affects 2 percent of the population. Hair loss due to ri-chotillomania cannot be treated effectively until the psychological reasons are addressed.

Alopecia Areata: Alopecia Areata hair loss is characterized by small or large balding patches on the scalp which may progress to complete hair loss. Medical illness Alopecia areata, Some lose their hair with bald spots in certain areas and others with thinning hair and will determine this auto immune disease. 

     Hair loss terms and glossary:

    Alopecia Universalis: Alopecia Universalis hair loss is similarto Alopecia but is the total hair loss of all body hair this is a non life-threatening hair loss medical condition.

    Telogen Effluvium: Telogen Effluvium hair loss is characterized by general thinning all through the scalp and widening spaces in the hair.

    Tinea Capitis: Tinea Capitis hair loss is typically associated with patchy hair loss, sometimes accompanied by scaling, itching, and pain.

    Trichotillomania: A psychological condition leading to hair loss, an incessant desire to pluck or pull one's own hair out resulting in hair loss.

    Scarring alopecia: Hair loss due to scarring of the scalp area. This condition occurs in African-American women and due to persistent tight braiding of hair, or inflammation of hair follicles and subsequent scarring or track alopecia.

    Parents of a children suffering from alopecia areata want the safest solution to their child's problem. The good news is that in many children a small patch can correct itself without treatment and may be gone for ever. In some children it may return at a later date. There is currently no way of being certain.

    The National Alopecia Areata Foundation was founded in 1981 when a young Californian with the disease looked for others to share and understand her problems. It has grown into the world center of alopecia area of information, research, and service.
