What are wigs?
Per Webster's dictionary the word wig is "manufactured covering of hair for the head."  The word wig is often misused in the description of modern hair replacement. It is true that most are pre-manufactured, inexpensive and readily available at a verity of retail wig locations. Many people try off the shelf wigs as a substitute for hair loss for financial reasons or due to the lack of education on the availability of better alternatives. Every wig has to be cut, thinned, and styled, often several times. To keep a net base wig from falling off, even during active sports, special double-sided tape can be purchased in beauty supply outlets and fastened to the inside of the wig.

Several names for types of wigs are being used in the market today:

  • custom wig
  • human hair wig
  • medical wigs
  • synthetic wig
  • ready made wig
  • integration human hair wig
  • alopecia wigs

There are large array of wigs: custom wigs, human hair wigs, ready made wigs, alopecia wig, medical wigs...The following discussion will guide you through this maze of hair loss treatments specifically on wigs, hair integration, hair weaving and more.

What type of wig should you get?
Should someone with alopecia hair get: a human hair wig, synthetic hair wig, or a hair replacement system? Most widely used wigs are custom human hair wigs or off the shelf ready made synthetic wigs.  Custom wigs are available in human hair, synthetic and blend of both human and synthetic. Other cosmetic options are hairpieces, hair weaves or hair extensions.  These are used to conceal thinning hair or complete baldness.

 Do you want a wig that's custom-made?
While machine-made wigs can look natural, custom human hair wigs look more like your real hair. Handmade custom human hair wigs can usually be parted in different places on your head, and they can make it easier to wear hair accessories. Handmade custom-made wigs are more expensive than machine-made wigs but are highly recommend for permanent hair wearers for a long term natural fit.

For a woman or man who is experiencing hair loss, the best alternative is to seek an appointment for consultation with a hair replacement professional such as a City Lights Hair Center certified hair loss experts.  Hair replacement professionals also provide professional styling, maintenance services, and products to keep our clients looking natural and well groomed.

Handmade Wigs
We offer wigs and hairpieces that are natural, comfortable, and among the lightest in weight and density with a natural scalp like appearance that can be styled in any direction.

Mono-Top Wigs are hand tied top of the head pieces, with a natural looking scalp like top combined with a machine made weft back. This represents the best of both technologies to create today's style and comfort.

Machine Wefted Wigs Are strips of hair assembled to create a simple style of Wig and are constructed from rows of wefts (fringes) of synthetic fiber or human hair sewn together into the shape of a cap, but do not have an underlying solid cap.  A thin wefted wig will usually have the rows of wefts spaced farther apart, which makes the wig lighter and more "breathable.
